Open Letter for CEC & CCSE - Election 2021

Hello Community,

Today, I announce my candidacy for Community Education Council (CEC) for District 1 and Citywide Council for Special Education (CCSE). Both council groups are near and dear to my heart.

Quality education is the bedrock of our society and the future of our humanity. I grew up in the Lower East Side and am a product of the NYC public school system. Now, my three young sons attend the NEST+m public school as lower and middle-grade students. As a community servant, I was re-elected into the School Leadership Team (SLT) twice and currently in my second term since 2018. In that capacity, I serve as an advocating voice for the parent community. I have worked collaboratively with the DOE, PTAs, and other SLTs to ensure our children receive the best education opportunities.

Professionally, I pride myself as a continuous learner, mentor, and educator. During the day, I am the head of data science for a major banking institution. At night, I am a Professor at NYU for graduate programs teaching a multitude of courses. I have also served as a research advisor for scholarships and fellowships like the Fulbright Award. These capacities provide a venue to help mentor students, learn from my colleagues, and focus on an objective, data-driven vision for success.

Personally, my family is very mixed in diversity, ethnicity, and a spectrum of skin color. However, we only have one nationality, which is the United States of America. We live in unprecedented times with the pandemic, and the challenges of social distancing have decreased conversations about important topics within education. Unfortunately, it seems as though our children's educational opportunities are in harm's way, and the community's voices advocating for our children are not enough.
